Project7-7 | A Powerful Story about Nature, Humanity & Art

Submitted by admin on Wednesday, 19 November 2008No Comment

7 continents. 6 elderly. 4 200 children. 1 home. 1 legacy. Infinite paths to the future… Protect 7-7 is the powerful new creation of renowned Belgian artist and , Wim Tellier.

Six blow ups form the backdrop for six reclining elderly figures, 3 men, 3 women, aged 77, naked but for feather and down covering their genitalia. Each of these figures is “carried” by the photos of 700 colourful drawings, each depictions of the future through the eyes and by the hands of a 7 year old.
Each blow up therefore represents a collage of the inheritance, dreams and aspirations of a single
continent:
1. Africa (South Africa, Namibia)
2. North America (Mexico)
3. South America (Bolivia)
4. Asia (Japan)
5. Europe (Belgium)
6. Oceania (New Zealand, Papua New Guinea)
These six enormous blow ups, each approximately 800m2 in size, come together to form a unique installation on Antarctica, the seventh continent. Six figures, basking in the sun on the coldest place on Earth on what appear from a distance to be colourful beach towels.
This very specific constellation generates a battery of potential interpretations and double meanings. Does the older generation leave the world a better, more beautiful, safer, healthier place or is their “weight” the burden future generations must bear?
Fragmentation, reconciliation. Surface, depth. Individual, collective. Young, old. Past, future. , nature. Protect 7-7 oscillates between the extremes of a complex equation. Never choosing sides, it resonates its powerful tone in the space between them. It shows us that each element of the equation – past, place, future – is equally important and equally vulnerable. It beckons us to challenge our relation to our origins, to the world we inhabit and ultimately, to ourselves.
Unique 80cm x 80cm fragments of the six original blow ups, depicting one of the 700 children per continent photographed through his/her on Plexiglas, are available for individual sale from the website: www.protect77.com. Each fragment represents the culmination of a complex artistic, technical and logistical process.
